In this series about Jesus’s arrival in Jerusalem I will skip the detailed analysis of the Synoptic ‘Cleansing’ stories, except for some short remarks. The rest of this blogpost is dedicated to John’s story (2:13-22).

Theoloog Gerard de Haas meent het ei van Columbus gevonden te hebben ten aanzien van de historische Jezus, zo blijkt uit zijn paasartikel in Trouw. Jezus zou een (soort) nar geweest zijn, die de bestaande verhoudingen op zijn kop zette. Dat het artikel enkele uren vóór 1 april werd gepubliceerd, zal geen toeval zijn. Continuing the series about the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem, I would like to reflect on the complicated relation between story and history. After running through the comparison of Mark and Matthew and Mark and Luke regarding their Entry stories (leaving the Gospel of John aside for now), one could ask if Matthew and Luke can contribute anything to the question of historicity. To eliminate them due to their dependency on Mark is the most straightforward approach. Or is it?

Some comments: In fact, Ehrman and Wallace agree on most points, so the debate is not really ground-shaking. The valid point of Ehrman is that it is theoretically problematical to talk about “the original text” and the valid point of Wallace on the other hand is that if you don’t know the original text, it is problematical to talk about authorial intentions for instance. Unfortunately they don’t go into a really scholarly dialogue. However, that was to be expected in the case of a public encounter.
